Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory film locations in Munich

LOCATION: Munich
FILM: Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory

“If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it, anything you want to do it, want to change the world? There’s nothing to it” Okay so this is a kids film but it’s one of the greatest kids films ever made and I love how psychotic Gene Wilder makes Willy Wonka. This could have been very dark indeed if they had intended it for a different audience.

Most of this film was obviously shot on sets but the beginning of the movie is filmed in Munich including the school and the street scenes.

I am not so much suggesting this as a reason to go to Munich but if you should find yourself there then you have to go and view what was once the most wondrous building in most children’s eyes…. Willy Wonka’s Chocolate factory!

All of the external shots of the Chocolate Factory were filmed at the Old Gasworks from Emmy-Noether-Strasse near Munich U-Bahn station Westfriedhof. The flats and clocktower still exist and just walking past or standing and staring through the gates bring back the memories of Charlie Bucket, Veruca, Salt, Augustus Gloop, Violet Bearigard and my personal favourtie Mike “WHAM you’re dead” TeeVee.

Anyway, that was just a quick stop we must move on for we have “So much time and so little to do. Wait a minute. Strike that. Reverse it.”
